Heppner Waterline Extension Project

In June, 2010 A&K Earth Movers, Inc. was awarded the Heppner Waterline Extension Project, the waterline is being implemented by Washoe County in anticipation of failing private wells that the residents are currently using.

A&K Earth Movers began work on the project June 14th, 2010 and was under the gun with a very aggressive schedule that was required in order to win the bid. The work on the project consists of installing 9,178 lineal feet of 6”C-900 PVC, 5,969 lineal feet of 8”C-900 PVC, 20 fire hydrants and 95 domestic water services.

Some of the challenges associated with this project are tight working areas, and as always, working in residential neighborhoods keeping access for residents and maintaining safe operations is key.

To date, the project is on budget and schedule and is tentatively on the calendar to begin paving operations near the end of July.

Churchill County Oasis Interceptor Sewer Project

In December 2009 A & K Earth Movers, Inc was awarded Churchill County, Nevada “Oasis Interceptor Sewer” Project. The work includes construction of a gravity sewer interceptor consisting of approximately 5,820 lined feet of 12” diameter DDR 35 PVC Pipe, 29 Manholes and 71,000 sq feet of Asphalt Pavement. Repair and road reconstruct, modifications to an existing sewage lift station, including installation of a new wet well.

A & K began construction on the 2 million dollar project the first week in March 2010. The project presented the crews and staff with many different challenges. Derik Cotchett Project Manager and Steve Moore Project Superintendent both agreed “This is not a simple sewer project” the average water table is at 8’ feet and the sewer main is at 17 feet deep, with the pump station at 25 feet. The need for dewatering wells was eminent. Dewatering wells were installed 40 foot deep on 75 foot centers, in order to lower the water table to a manageable level, and all pipe installation.

This created another challenge; local residents on private wells would experience difficult or even failure of their own water systems. To meet this challenge Churchill County and A & K Earth Movers, installed a temporary domestic water system, before dewatering wells could commence.

Once these issues were resolved there was still the disposal of discharge from the dewatering, this presented its own challenges. “But we are up to the Challenge” said Steve Moore.

The 194 day contract is scheduled to be complete September 1st. As always, out goal is to provide a Safe, Quality Project in a timely manner, with as little impact on local residents.
